Grow Your Own Veg

Friday, March 12, 2010

The Grow Your Own boom is responsible : The sun's out and so are the many gardeners and potential gardeners who've been put off by the horrendous weather.  And it seems to be a desire to join the Grow Your Own boom that's enticing them out!
I've been sowing seeds of favourites like a wide range of tomatoes (and of course basil to go with them!) aubergines and peppers, and lining up packets of seed including rocket, spinach, lettuce, beans and many herbs.  Meanwhile the seed potatoes are getting themselves planted, some already in and some still finishing their chitting but any day now will be joining the other in the now not quite so wet soil.
We've had some pretty cold nights but with the aid of a few bits of fleece, all's well, and in not too long I'll be receiving my collections of all those plants that I'm using in my 'Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood' packages - these will be joining all the other veg so that I can be sure exactly what stage they're at and give perfectly timed advice......and planning some fabulously tasty meals too!

Pippa on BBC Garderners' World

I don't often grow tomatoes outdoors, but this year I planted out leftovers from the greenhouse, which became massive and hugely productive.

The peaches ('Avalon') cropped brilliantly, producing the biggest fruits yet, but as soon as they approached ripeness, the wasps attacked.

This must be the first year that I've harvested a crop of garlic with no traces of rust: not a pustule in sight.

I adore home-grown courgettes. They lack that slightly bitter taste and spongy texture you can get with supermarket specimens.
