John Cushnie

Saturday, January 02, 2010

The happiness of New Year's day came to an abrupt halt when I received the call to say that my lovely friend and colleague, John Cushnie had died.  So just to say good-bye to such a very, very funny, clever, kind and talented man.  Yes, he was a great friend and colleague...but there was so much more he was known for  : one of the sharpest true wits on the radio, and one of the wickedest grins there ever was,  such a deep, deep dislike of vegetables in all their sizes and shapes, John was truly horrified by the grow your own boom (but never the less was so excited about my own Grow your Own with Pippa Greenwood venture, and offered his help too!), believed in saying what he thought (often 'get rid of it!'), and in true gardening sense, called a spade a spade.....John, we'll miss you so much, in fact we already do.

Pippa on BBC Garderners' World

This must be the first year that I've harvested a crop of garlic with no traces of rust: not a pustule in sight.

I adore home-grown courgettes. They lack that slightly bitter taste and spongy texture you can get with supermarket specimens.

This year we held our annual Gardeners' Question Time Garden Party at our GQT garden at Sparsholt College near Winchester, Hampshire.

Well, here I sit in the backstage area of the main theatre at BBC Gardeners' World Live [...] Earlier we recorded the first of several mini Gardeners' Question Time programmes.
