Grow Your Own Broccoli, the best ever!
Tuesday, October 13, 2009
At last! Home grown broccoli and in decent quantities without too much fuss ! This year whilst I was test-driving my new 'Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood' system, I tried plants of the broccoli which I'm now offering as part of the package. Its called 'Ironman', though personally I feel like calling it 'Superman'....or perhaps it is me who is feeling like 'Superwoman'!! It was a universal success amongst the 'guinea pigs' (a selection of friends in various locations from Aberdeen to Surrey who were not accomplished veg gardeners and were persuaded to try growing the plants with the help of my emailed advice system).
I'd wholeheartedly recommend 'Ironman' to anyone who likes broccoli, especially if they have struggled with it before. Heads over 600g each, and then several weeks later, very useful and good-sized sideshoots which we're still enjoying...and the taste is, wonderful...broccoli at its best !

> Harvesting garlic
This must be the first year that I've harvested a crop of garlic with no traces of rust: not a pustule in sight.
> Growing courgettes
I adore home-grown courgettes. They lack that slightly bitter taste and spongy texture you can get with supermarket specimens.
> Pests and problems
This year we held our annual Gardeners' Question Time Garden Party at our GQT garden at Sparsholt College near Winchester, Hampshire.
> Gardeners’ Question Time
Well, here I sit in the backstage area of the main theatre at BBC Gardeners' World Live [...] Earlier we recorded the first of several mini Gardeners' Question Time programmes.
