Garden Frosts in Force!
18 October 2009
It may not have been a very inspiring summer, but over the last few days the frosts have arrived and had quite an impact. Even in my Hampshire garden, frosts can cause havoc and I'm now faced with a couple of summer-show, rather tender plants which have been hit. But for many areas of the country these first few frosts have just been a warning. I've just spent the morning moving pots with the last of the summer bedding in them closer in to the house, and covering up some of the more tender veg crops, just so I can get the very last from them. Smaller ornamentals are now wearing 'cages' of chicken wire filled with dry bracken to protect them from what is to come. With some of the softer leaved plants it is worth trimming off any frosted leaves, but on the whole I leave damaged stems in place as they will help to provide a bit of protection from harsher frosts that may be to come.........next I'll be out insulating the taps !
